An Ode to Brother Bands (Oldie But Goodie)

I wrote this gem on the occassion of the Economy Size’s sixth birthday.  A couple of weeks ago he turned seven - the drums are in pieces on the floor of the spare room in the basement.  So much for fame and fortune.

Today is the Economy Size’s sixth birthday.  My youngest son requested a drum kit, and being the ever indulgent parents that we are, of course we obliged.  As I type, the boy is behind me creating a racket like none I have ever heard.  Earlier he asked his father if he was this good at playing the drums on his first day.  Just now he announced that he is the best drummer in the world.  Me?  I just want some Tylenol - extra strength please.

We have the beginning of a real band here, the mid-size on guitar, the economy size on drums, and the full size on…  Well the full size hasn’t expressed any interest in a musical instrument, but personally I am pushing for the spoons.  A couple of weeks I ago I was waxing enthusiastic to my sister about my boys’ musical talent, telling her how they are going to be the next brother band, you know like The Kinks, or Oasis, or The Black Crows.  She pointed out that Ray and Dave Davies fight constantly on-stage and off, the Gallagher brothers have a shared love of hotel room devastation, and The Black Crows have long since broken up.  She didn’t have to mention The Jackson Five or The Beach Boys.
